THE BIG THREE
SYDNEY GOLFERS' TRIP TO ENGLAND Nothing that had not previously been evident was revealed by the 1937 play for the New South Wales amateur golf championship. Out of it came as clearly as anyone could desire the fact that Harry and Jim Ferrier are the stars of Sydney amateurs. Nothing seems possible between now and the end of the year to prevent these two being certainties for selection in the four who will early next year as the guest of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews represent Australia in Great Britain. Just as surely Harry Williams appears to be another who will be named by the selectors for the great adventure, and for the other place there may be a dozen whose form and claims will have to be considered by the selectors. The only detail that appears at all likely to block one of these three from making the trip is the coming in their way of any detail which, after the medical examination, would suggest that the strain of the gruelling play they will have to face would affect them. There is to be a stringent medical examination of each man before the A.G.U. will confirm his selection. Already big interest centres in the play of every outstanding amateur. Each performance is observed with the 1938 trip in view. Hence it was considered that Alan Waterson, who has been on outstanding player for
some time, and is still considered by many as a likely serious claimant for a place, had the ill luck to strike a bad patch at Rose Bay. However, this talented player has plenty of occasions ahead to redeem himself. The most important test undoubtedly will be the national championship occasion at Kensington, in September.
