THE OPEN ROAD

HARRIER ACTIVITIES (By “Marathon”) Season’s Fixtures July 31—Visit from Christchurch Clubs. August 14 —Orr-Walker Cup Race; South Canterbury Championship, Caroline Bay. August 28—Canterbury cross-country championships, at Christchurch. September 11—New Zealand crosscountry championships at Timaru. September 18—Temuka-Timaru road race handicap. The Norrie Cup Race run at Waimate last Saturday provided one of the finest cross-country races held amongst the local harrier clubs for some time. Some 21 runners faced the starter and the race was full of interest from start to finish. One of the pleasing features of the race was the excellent performances of some of the younger runners. Lloyd Williams is to be congratulated on his success in winning the Norrie Cup. his time for the race was 4 seconds slower than Donovan's time last year. D. Squire who is having his first run as a senior this year ran a well-judged race. He was with the leaders over most of the journey and at one stage of the race was leading the field with Williams and Taylor at his heels. He is to be congratulated on his splendid performance and he will provide keen competition in the Orr-Walker Cup this year. Rex Taylor who ran into third place was not quite up to his excellent performance of last year, his time for the race on Saturday being 8 seconds slower than last year. George McKirdy finished in fourth place, the same position he held last year. Errol Darby another of last year’s junior runners, also ran a splendid race and finished well up in sth place. H. Ward finished in sixth place, only Imin 23sec behind the leader.

In the teams’ race for the Powell Shield the Timaru Club again owe their success to the even balance of their team and though only represented by four runners they never lost the hold of the race during any part of the journey.
