IMPROVED CLASSES

CHRYSANTHEMUM SHOW

SUGGESTIONS APPROVED

Suggestions for the improvement of chrysanthemum classes at the autumn show were made to the Timaru Horticultural Society at a meeting last night by the chrysanthemum circle. Present: Mr G. E. Knowles (chairman) , Mesdames G. E. Knowles, W. Rooney, Messrs A. W. Anderson, C. E. Graham, J. W. Hinchey, F. E. Duncan, W. J. Hogg, W. J. Foote, F. J. Mottram, Smith, L. B. Pearson, J. Milligan, G. Smith and P. Nicol.

The Circle suggested that two judges be appointed for the show, one for Japanese classes and one for single blooms; that the Society approach Mrs Wm. C. Burns with a view to having the number of pots in her challenge cup classes reduced from six to three; that the intermediate classes be enlarged to provide for single Japanese blooms, and that classes for single chrysanthemums as in the novice class be added; that a miniature cup be given with each challenge cup in lieu of a cash prize. The chairman reported that he had interview Mrs Burns who was quite willing to fall in with the Society's wishes. The recommendations were approved. The Orari Horticultural Society wrote advising that the dates of the autumn show clashed with their exhibition, which had been held on the second Thursday of March for the last 10 years.

It was decided to reply that while the clash was regretted, it wai impossible to alter the dates.

The chairman reported that Mr G. Bowker had given medals for special prizes and that Mrs Bowker had taken over the donation ot the special prizes previously given by the late Mrs R. H. Rhodes.

Votes of thanks were accorded the donors.

It was decided to ask the Rev. F. W. Avery, Willoughby, to judge the spring show and to give a short address, on narcissi culture.

Mrs P. R. Woodhouse and Mr A. S. Jones were elected vice-presidents of the Society.
