RACING AND TROTTING

On and Off the Track

A BUDGET OF NEWS AND VIEWS FIXTURES Racing: July 17—Waimate Hunt July 17—Hawke's Bay Hunt. July 24—Rangitikei Hunt. July 24—South Canterbury Hunt July 31—Christchurch Hunt Trotting: Aug. 7, 11, 14 —Metropolitan T.C. First race at Waimate to-day at 12 o'clock. Prostration, who was in retirement, had recently to be destroyed. Weights for the two Grand Nationals and Winter Cup are due on Tuesday. Hunting Cry has been received by Mr L. A. Mclntosh as a gift from Mr T. Fraser. The only totalisator fixtures in the Dominion to-day are Hunt meetings at Waimate and Hastings. The Balboa gelding entered for the Hunt meetings has been registered as He appeared In the Waimate acceptances as Tuarangi, but that name was not available. Rumours have gained ground that Talking may not stand a solid preparation, ar 1 for this reason quite a lot of pre-post double bookmakers are anxious to do business about the £19,000 colt in the spring races. The season’s racing in Australia wall be remembered as a period notable for the surprises recorded. In practically every big handicap “unbeatable” favourites have gone done, and it has been the best year for outsiders within memory.

Collision, who was a trifle unlucky in the Winter Hurdles at Trentham in running up against such a solid customer as John Charles, was shipped south during the week for events at the National meeting. He is developing into a fine hurdler and more should be heard of him if he remains sound.

Royal Appellant has not been overtaxed since he accounted for the York Handicap at the Auckland winter meeting, but J. M. Buchanan is raiding* him along a little faster in his work. He has been entered for the Winter Cup, and all going well in the meantime he will make the trip south.

Although he was not entered for the Winter Cup there is still a chance that Enge will come to Riccarton to contest the other main flat events. His Trentham form was so outstanding that it is difficult to imagine some of those which finished behind him turning the tables at Riccarton, despite a readjustment of the handicaps.

During the Wellington meeting Sir Charles Clifford was asked to put a price on Day Dress (Day Comet-Ball Dress), but no business was reported. This recalls that Day Dress was sold last season to a Wellington man, and as the buyer reported that she was lame when put into work after a spell, Sir Charles Clifford returned the money and took her back.

The best indication of the improvement in racing in Brisbane since starting price betting was attacked is shown by the fact that the Brisbane Amateur Turf Club has stated its intention of running a £3OOO Doomben Cup next year, an increase of £2OOO on the event decided last month* It is the intention of the club eventually to run a £5OOO cup over a mile and a half. This year's Cup was over a mile and a quarter.

Triteleia might not have run in the Grand National Hurdle Race if he had not beaten Pooley Bridge in a “school" over hurdles about two years ago. At the time Pooley Bridge had not won a race. When he had forged his way to the top of the tree as a jumper, it occurred to H. Freedman that there were great possibilities in his horse. That is how Triteleia became a jumper and started on his way towards the 1937 Gn-nd National. Triteleia is the botanical name of a purple flower, and was selected for the horse liecame his dam was Mauve.

Advice has been received that the three-year-old Martara landed in India in excellent condition, his purchaser stating that he appeared as if he had been only two days at sea instead of having come through the long voyage from New Zealand. So good was his health that he was able to commence steady work in record time after his arrival. It is not intended to hurry Martara’s preparation for racing in India and it is unlikely that he will be called upon to do much before the important meetings at Calcutta in December. Gay Talkie also reached India in good condition.

Woodbine Park, a Canadian club, adopted unusual steps in dealing with “off-the-course” betting last year, and achieved satisfactory results. The officials offered a reward of £lO for the conviction of any bookmaker operating in the vicinity of the track. The outcome was the arrest of 60 bookmakers, necessitating the payment of £6OO in rewards, but the pari-mutuel turnover increased £50,000 by comparison with the corresponding meeting of the previous year. This year the club is again paying rewards for the conviction of bookmakers. It is not stated to what extent or by what authority the bookmakers were punished.

Hunt clubs were first enabled to conduct meetings under a totalisator permit by the 1914 Racing Commission, which provided eight such days in each racing season to be shared by sixteen hunt clubs in alternate years. The 1920 Racing Commission Increased the number of days for the hunt clubs to fifteen in each season, so that such clubs could hold annual meetings. The fourteen clubs that now use the permits are Birchwood, Christchurch, Dannevirke, Egmont - Wanganui, Hawke's Bay, Otago, Pakuranga, Poverty Bay, Rangitikei, South Canterbury, Taranaki, Wulmate, Waikato, and Bay of Plenty-Rotorua. The Manawatu Hunt, permit is being utilised by the Manaaattu ■’*»clng Club.

SMALL PROFIT

POINT-TO-POINT MEETING The South Canterbury Hunt Club’s recent point-to-point meeting resulted in a profit slightly in excess of £B, it was stated at a meeting of the committee yesterday, over which Mr C. L. Orbell presided. The chairman said that without the donations to the prize fund the Club could not have conducted the meeting profitably. Only £lB was taken at the gate, and the speaker suggested that the Club might have to raise its charges. Other members referred to the general success of the meeting, which was described as one of the best for some years.

No action was taken on the suggestion of the president. A letter from the Transport Department stated that the Department was getting in touch with clubs with the full approval of the New Zealand Racing Conference. It was necessary to prevent congestion of cars at race meetings, particularly after the last race. Most clubs had satisfactory facilities for dealing with congestion at the gates, but that was not always the case. The Department would be pleased to arrange for its traffic inspectors to help with the arrangements for race days, and to that end clubs were asked to get in touch with the Department's inspectors at the nearest of the four main centres.

The secretary (Mr H. H. Fraser) reported having applied to Christchurch for the advisory services of an inspector. He added that the men in charge of the parking at the meetings were of opinion that all cars should be compelled to travel up the drive, so that some control could be exercised over the parking area. At present the cars went where they liked.

The secretary’s action in inviting the advice of the Department was approved.

If The Surgeon goes to the post at Waimate to-day he will make his first appearance as a hurdler, and also his first in the colours of Mr J. Lindsay. He will be bracketed with Royal Gallant.

The Waimate Hunt Club held no meeting in 1931 or 1932, and there was a danger that the fixture might lapse, but it was revived in a modest way way in 1933 after guarantors had come forward to indemnify the club against possible loss. Provided favourable weather is experienced to-day the meeting should be firmly re-established on the calendar.

In a review of the rising four-year-olds engaged in the leading spring events “Musket,” writing in “The Sydney Mall,” says: “Mala has made better progress between three and four years than has Talking and it is my opinion that he Is given an undeniable chance in aijy of the races his connections may map out for him. It is too early yet to forecast what Maia’s programme will be, but It can be definitely stated that he has built up Into a magnificent horse and he should be one of the bright particular stars of the spring.” Maia’s engagements in leading events, to be decided respectively at Randwick, Caulfield and Flemington, are as follows: The Metropolitan, 13 furlongs, 8.13; Caulfield Cup, 14 miles, 8.11; Melbourne Cup, 2 miles, 8.12.

WAIMATE HUNT CLUB

CARD FOR TO-DAY The Waimate District Hunt’s annual totalisator meeting is to be held to-day on the Waimate Racing Club’s course, commencing at 12 o’clock. The card is a varied one, comprising three events for jumpers, one in harness and four flat races, and if the weather is favourable the meeting should provide an interesting outing for sportspeople. The rain which fell yesterday made the surface a little soft, but if there is no further heavy fall the track should be in fair order. A special train will leave Timaru for Waimate at 10.19. Horses which appear to have admirers are:—

Amateur Cup: Waikari, Lord Reading. Novice Stakes: Prince Flaneur, Master Dingle. Studholme Hurdles: Royal Pal, Royal Amphora. Hunt Cup: Miss Winston, Hot Tea, Bonny Buff. A race which has disappeared from the Hunt programmes this season is the Hunters’ Plate, a high-weight handicap run on the flat. In the days before these clubs were given totalisator permits these events were contested by genuine hunters ridden by amateurs, but in more recent times the jockeys have been professionals and the horses usually patched-up flat racers with the minimum qualification, and there was a fairly general fee? ; that the races had outlived their usefulness. The amateur and the hunter have been brought out again by steeplechases which, if they do not swell the totalisator turnover, are run In a sporting atmosphere and arc—4 very considerable interest. Quite a number of new horses, or horses new to the district, are engaged at the Hunt meetings. Survoy, a gelding by Surveyor, which recently joined E. J. Ellis’s string, has won three races in Auckland province during the latter half of the season. Prince Umberto, a half-brother to the hurdler Iddo, did a fair amount of racing without much success in Wellington

province two or three years ago. Royal Grafton, a recent recruit to S. Barr’s stable, was the subject of a legal action in Timaru some time back. Ariti (Tuarangi) will represent a newcomer to the ranks of owners in Mr A. Elworthy. Macailfeil is not altogether new, as he competed at the Levels point-to-point meet as Sandy. Le Chicot has something of a dual personality, as he goes to the hunt as The Joker.
