WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

TYCHO The Tycho Women’s Institute celebrated its fifth birthday last Saturday afternoon. Tire president, Mrs McLeod welcomed all present including visitors from Plesasant Point, Cave, Washdyke, Glen-iti, Fairview, Claremont and Rosewill institutes. A most enjoyable programme, which was greatly appreciated by all was given as follows.—Play-reading: Mesdames King, Inglis, Kemshed and Misses Inglis and Mills of Timaru; songs, Mrs Stewart and Miss Kelland; pianoforte solo, Mesdames Smith and Kelland. Community singing was led by Mrs Cliff. When afternoon tea was served the president, called on Mrs King to light the candles of the beautiful birthday cake, made and decorated by Mrs McLeod. This done, Miss Gibson extinguished them, and Mrs Morrison, the first president, cut the cake. The premier bloom prizes for the year were won by Mrs McLeod 1, Mrs McPhedran 2.

Competitions were held for parsnips and carrots and resulted.—Mrs Gliddon 1, Mrs McPhedran 2, Mrs McLeod 3. Prtmroses: Mrs McPhedran 1, Mrs Smith 2. Premier bloom: Mrs McLeod (chrysanthemum) 1.

An amusing competition, tearing a pig from paper was won by Miss Inglis 1, Miss Armstrong 2. During the afternoon a very successful “bring and buy” was held. WASHDYKE The monthly meeting of the Wasndyke Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs Blay, there being a large attendance. Invitations were received from Gleniti, Tycho, Pleasant Point and Arowhenua Institutes to attend their birthday parties. Tree planting for Coronation year was discussed, and it was decided that a tree be planted in the avenue on the main highway. The birthday party to take place in October was discussed and it was decided that there would fiot be a birthday dance this year. The competitions judged by the visitors resulted as follow’s.—Senior, egg shell mosaic: Mrs J. King 1, Mrs Me-' Duff 2, Mrs Darling 3. Juniors, Miss A. Phillips 1, Miss B. Kellahan 2. School lunch, seniors: Mrs McDuff 1, Mrs Darling 2, Miss K. Connolly 3. Juniors, Miss B. Kellahan 1, Miss A. Phillips 2. Bloom, seniors: Mrs Pearce 1. Juniors, Miss A. Phillips 1. The hostesses were Mesdames L. King, I’elman, Misses Kelman and I. King.
