BUTTER BOX TIMBER
EXPERIMENTS IN AUSTRALIA United Press iwrion- By Electric Telegrapi- '■•nvriehr SYDNEY, July 14. Trials with hemlock and hoop pine timbers for butter boxes, carried out under the auspices of the Department of Agriculture here, have proved most successful. The official report on the subject says that the butter experimented with was packed under departmental inspection at the Wingham Factory, since when it has been in cold storage for two months. The report deals with the method of treating the boxes with casein and formalin sprays, after which they were lined with triple-foil, aluminium parchment and cardboard. The chief conclusion arrived at by the examiners was that the surface of all butter so packed was free from wood taint, except where wet papering was resorted to, and there they had definite evidence of the value of triple-foil parchment in preventing both surface taint and a deepening of the surface colour of the butter. It was emphasised that dry papering gave the best results while the proper selection of timber was as essential as satisfactory spraying.
