July 21, 6.17 a.m. CONDITIONS IN TIMARU After heavy rain overnight conditions yesterday morning were cloudy with a keen southerly wind blowing. Towards noon, however, the sky cleared, and but for the persistent south wind, the sunny weather of the afternoon would have been pleasant. Records at Timaru Park yesterday were:— Barometer—3o. Max. temp.—4B.4. Min. temp, on grass—22.B degrees. Frost—9.2 degrees. Wind—W.S.W.l. Rain —.07ins. Rainfall to date this year—l2.94ins. Rainfall to date last year—lB.s6ins. Sunshine—4.9 hours. Sunshine to date this year—9ss.lhrs. IN OTHER CENTRES Christchurch.— Heavy rain fell almost continuously from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. yesterday and in the evening the sky was overcast and threatening. A moderate south-west wand was blowing. The maximum temperature was 42 degrees. The barometer rose slowly during the day and registered 30.10 in at 5 p.m. Ashburton.— Rain fell heavily and unexpectedly yesterday morning. The night was calm and clear, with a cold temperature, a sharp frost of 9.3 degrees being recorded. The weather changed at about 6 a.m., and by 9 o’clock 29 points of rain had fallen. Tire rain continued heavily for anotherhour, when conditions cleared, although the sky remained overcast. The temperature was cold, and there was a slight southerly wind. Geraldine.— Frost 7 degrees. Air temperatures, min. 25, max. 58, at 9 a.m. 38. Showery early, improvement towards noon. Tcmuka.— After light showers of rain in the early morning yesterday was fine and warm with bright sunshine. The maximum temperature was 44 degrees and the minimum 17. Eight points of rain was registered. The glass was rising last evening. Waimate ifor 24 hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday): Thermometer, maximum 48.3; minimum 30.0; frost 11 degrees; rain 10 points; bright sunshine, 7 hours; wind gauge, miles run in last 24 hours, 61. Rain fell during the night, and yesterday was sunny with a cold wind blowing. Dunedin.— The sun shone brightly yesterday morning but a cold southwesterly breeze kept the temperature down, the maximum recorded being 47 degres. Early in the afternoon the sky became overcast and a few showers fell, but the weather again cleared slightly and the barometer showed a rising tendency. CANTERBURY FORECAST Winds. —South-w 7 esterly, strong at first in some exposed positions but soon decreasing. Weather—Cold and changeable with some pasing showers at first but gradually improving; some sharp frosts probable inland. Seas—Rather rough north of Kaikoura; elsewhere moderate.
