HARBOUR BRIDGE
CONSTRUCTION URGED By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, July 15. Arguments In favour of the early construction of the proposed Auckland harbour bridge were submitted to the Acting-Minister of Labour (Hon. P. c. Webb), by a deputation, representing North Shore motoring and Labour interests. It was suggested to the Minister that this work could well be considered in connection with his plan to find work for hundreds of men in the Auckland district now on the unemployment register. “I would sooner see 700 men creating a bridge than remaining on sustenance,” said the Minister in reply. He would be glad to discuss it with the Cabinet. This work had already been discussed by Cabinet. They had contemplated an expenditure of £2,000,000, but had to consider whether a considerable portion of that money could not be better spent on land development in the Auckland district. They had felt that they were not In a position to go on with this project at once. "I do not like the idea of a toll,” he added. "If we are to have a bridge let us have a national one that will be as free to the people as any other route.”
