DRAMA LEAGUE
WAIMATE TO FORM A CENTRE Preliminary steps in the establishment of a Waimate centre of the South Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Drama League were taken at a meeting held last evening, when an organising and convening committee was set up to promote the forming of drama groups in the district and eventually to form a district executive. The Mayor, Mr G. Dash, presided over an attendance of about 35, including Dr. W. H. Unwin, president of the South Canterbury branch, the vice-president, Mr A. E. Lawrence, and Mr and Mrs W. E. Mills, of St. Andrews. The meeting was convened by Mr D. Newall. After addresses had been given by visiting members of the South Canterbury branch a motion for the formation of a Waimate Drama Centre was passed, and it was agreed that groups be formed by the various churches, which had the advantage of halts, after which group delegates could meet to form a central executive.
A provisional committee was elected as follows: —Mr D. Newall, convener, Mesdames E. E. Ernshaw, Barclay, C. G. Holmes, A. G. Pitts, Miss M. Lamach. Messrs J. Bowron, A. Sawell. C. Stanford, U. Leonard. J. L. Menzies, W. P. Black, N. L. Knell and Dr. R. G. Shackleton.
Votes of thanks were passed to the speakers and the convener, and after the meeting the gathering was entertained at supper by Mr D. Newall.
