TEMUKA

BOROUGH FINANCE REVIEW PRESENTED Particulars of how receipts exceeded the estimate and payments fell short of the amount allowed, Tesulting In a credit of £447 in the Temuka Borough Council’s general account for 1936-37, were given by the Town Clerk (Mr L. Butters) in a review of the year’s working which was considered by the Council when the estimates were being framed.

Reviewing the various accounts, Mr Butters stated that" those showing a credit were the general account £447. drainage extension maintenance £5/18/1, high pressure water £6l/2/3, No. 1 conversion loan interest £64/1/9, No. 2 conversion loan £l3/11/7, west side tank interest £3/10/9, making a total of £595/13/5. Debits had occurred in the waterworks maintenance account £l/14/3 and the sanitation and dust account £9, leaving a credit balance at the bank of £584/19/2.

Dealing with the credit in the general account, the report showed that the receipts in excess of the estimate were: Rate subsidy £62, licenses £3O, rents £22, refunds £76, miscellaneous £24, transfer £2O, rates £l3, advances refunded £B. Items of expenditure overestimated totalled £227 and those underestimated £35. The report set out in detail how the credits and saving in payments had occurred. In connection with rate collections it was shown that £330 was outstanding out of a total amount struck of £4505. The percentage outstanding was 7.3 as compared with 10.5 in 1935-36 and 9.6 in 1934-35. In view of the improved economic outlook, the report contained a recommendation that the Council Sue for arrears and this was adopted. A BALANCED BUDGET DOMAIN FINANCES From a balance-sheet which showed a credit of £4/9/6 for 1936-37, the Temuka Domain Board at a special meeting framed estimates for the coming year which will enable the Board to just meet payments with receipts. In considering the past year’s working members commented on the many improvements and repairs that had been effected, these totalling £309. The credit on the year's working was made possible largely by the generous response to the shop day appeal which returned £lO6/7/9, an increase of £3l on the estimate.

For the coming year the Borough Council’s grant has been reduced from £l5O to £lOO and other estimated revenue is: Football club gate £35, proceeds shop day £7O, rents £250, sale of firewood and posts £B5. ten per cent of gates £6, plant hire £2, baths caretaker’s salary contributions £l5, bathing fees £3, making a total cf £570. Estimated expenditure provided for includes £2 for new trees for the native section, £399 for wages, £3O for creek cleaning, £5O for tools, materials and repairs, £7 for mower servicing, £lO for | plant stocks, £23 for the baths care- I taker’s salary, £5 for printing and repairs at the baths and sundry other payments totalling £44, the whole completely absorbing the anticipated receipts. Hares Cause Damage. A considerable amount of damage to plants and flower beds has been done in the Domain by hares which have been carrying on the destruction under cover of darkness. The trouble started some time ago, but has been growing steadily worse and the curator (Mr G. Fletcher) now proposes to take measures to exterminate the pest. Although the domain has frequently suffered in the past by the depredations of rabbits, this is the first occasion that hares have been responsible for damage. Horgan, M. Downes, M. Healy, M. Earl, D. McGillen. “POSTAL INSPECTOR” “Postal Inspector” the Universal drama which will be shown to-night at the Elite Theatre, presents a stirring tale of a great mail robbery. The crime is committed, the criminals hunted out, run down and captured while a flood is raging over the country. Ricardo Cortez as the inspector gives a convincing performance of a sleuth who gets his man every time. The realism of the flood scenes makes members of the audience look for e rs and life preservers under the seats. But there is more than pulsing drama in “Postal Inspector,” although that quality alone makes the film worth seeing. There is a love affair between a blonde night club singer and a bank clerk which should satisfy the romantic mind. These characters are portrayed splendidly by Patricia Ellis and Michael Loring, a handsome newcomer to the screen who has achieved success on the stage. Procter’s, the Opticians, Christchurch, will be making their next professional visit to Temuka on Tuesday. 17tb August, when they may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Temuka Hotel. Appointments can now be made by ringing the U.F.S. Dispensary. ’phone 240 M
