NEW POST OFFICE
CEREMONY AT THAMES By Telegraph—Press Association THAMES, June 24. The foundation stone of the new Chief Post Office now in course of erection was laid by the Hon. I . Jones, Postmaster-General, this afternoon, before a large attendance of spectators. In the course of his speech Mr Jones said that his Department was more than just for posting letters and sending telegrams. It had a variety of activities. Last year the turnover of the Department was £220,000,000. At the end of the financial year £58,000,000 was standing at the credit of savings bank depositors, a record for that branch of the business. He referred to developments in transport, specially in the air, and the department's realisation of their potentialities. Mr Jones w'as presented with a silver trowel by Mr R. Stewart on behalf of .the contractors, W. H. Whittaker and Co., Ltd., as a memento of the occasion. Other speakers included Mr J. Thorn, M.P., and local body officials.
