BETTER WOOL CLASSES

EARLY SELECTION OF FLEECES The opinion that as South Canterbury was one of the most important wool growing areas in the Dominion, the wool section should be one of the most prominent in the Show, was expressed by the president (Mr G. H. Andrews) at a meeting of the Executive of the Association last night. Mr W. M. Sexton said that on a visit to the Otago Winter Show he had been impressed with the wool exhibits, and had been told that a high standard was maintained by careful selec-

tion. Before the shearing season schedules were issued to enable farmers to make a selection from their clips, and in that direction they were assisted by the classers of the various stock and station agency firms. The firms took a number of fleeces into their stores and classed them according to grades with a result that the very best were placed on exhibition and they were entered in their correct classes. He suggested that similar methods could be employed for next year's exhibition.

Mr W. H. Orbell. a prominent exhibitor in wool classes at the Show, concurred in the view expressed by Mr Sexton, and emphasised that the selection of fleeces according to counts was the task of an expert. After the fleeces had been selected great care was needed in handling them. He also suggested that the wool could be displayed to better advantage. Those and other points he proposed to discuss with the judge of the section 'Mr V. Collins), and he would then make a report to the Executive for the improvement of the class. Mr Orbell was thanked for his interest and it was agreed to solicit the help of the stock and station agency firms next year.
