“PIECE OF FOOLERY”

COSTS MOTORIST £l/10/It cost Cyril N. G. McPherson £1 with costs 10/- in the Timaru Magistrate's Court yesterday for what was described as “a piece of foolery.” McPherson. for whom Mr L. M. Inglis appeared, and pleaded guilty, was charged with negligently driving a motor car at Washdyke. The car was steering an erratic course, said Traffic Inspector Ashwell. He allowed defendant to pass and later stopped him. Defendant’s explanation was that he was trying to put “the wind up” a passenger in the back seat. It was dangerous driving. “It was a piece of foolery,” said Mr Inglis, who explained that defendant took care to see that no other traffic was near him at the time. The inspector was a quarter of a mile ahead of the car when the offence was committed.

In reply to the Magistrate (Mr H. Morgan, S.M.) the inspector said that there was very little traffic about at the time. “A fine of £1 for his folly’’ was the comment of the Magistrate.
