YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB
WAIHAORUNGA Mr Ivan Hurst presided over a good attendance at a debate held in the Waihaorunga Schoolroom between the Douglas and Waihaorunga Young Farmers’ Clubs. The judge, Mr A Kearton, of the Arno Club, gave some very helpful hints to members on debating. The first debate was, “That mod.?.’ll machi lery has proved a benefit to mankind." Messrs A. Sheddon, L Hanson and J. Ponsonby took the affirmative and Messrs G. Cleland. B Brown and A. Kinsman the negative. The result was a win for the negative by 72 points to 47. The second debate was, “That w« have opportunities as good as our grandfathers had when young men.’ Messrs J. Barclay, C. Whatman and Jin Ponsonby took the affirmative, and Messrs J. Hurstjr.. S. Goodall and Ivan Hurst the negative. The decision went to the affirmative by 80 points to 79. The third debate was, “That ‘he amalgamation of local bodies is desirable.” Messrs Geo. Barclay, A. Hurst and J. Bell took the affirmative and Messrs H. H. Whatman. Geo. Cleland and Adam Young the negative. The negative won by 85 points to 83. Mr Jack Hurst proposed a very hearty vote of thanks to Mr Kearton /or the able manner in which he had judged the debate. Supper was handed round
