No. 12 shaft In the Crown mines, which is heavily timbered, has been a blazing inferno for the past eighteen hours. The fire was discovered by a night shift of 80 men, who, traversing the tunnels, encountered smoke. They retreated, and reached the surface safely before a huge volume of poisonous gas sw’ept up, Fortunately the outbreak started between shifts.
