CRITICISM OF SHOW

PRESIDENT REPLIES LOCAL INDUSTRIES ENCOURAGED Asked to comment on the criticism contained in a letter signed by Mr R. M. Richards, in the correspondence columns of "The Timaru Herald" on Wednesday, the president of the South Canterbury Industrial Exhibition and Winter Show Association (Mr G. H. Andrews) said yesterday that the Association had done everything in its power to encourage local manufacturers to exhibit, and made a big effort this year to secure as many working models as possible. A special space concession was offered for such models and the Association felt that its efforts had been fruitful. Regarding a suggestion by the correspondent that steps should be made to incorporate the existing committee with the Agricultural and Pastoral Association and thus cater for the interests of the district, Mr Andrews explained that the Winter Show Association was formed jointly by the A. and P. Association and the Chamber of Commerce, and the A. and P. Association was capably represented on the Show Executive by the president and two past presidents. In addition the president of the South Canterbury Executive of the Farmers’ Union was a vice-president of the Show Association, while the immediate past president was a member of the Show Executive.

“Although the Minister of Agriculture (Hon. W. Lee Martin) made a comparison, we have not endeavoured to compare our exhibition with the Hamilton Winter Show,” said Mr Andrews, “but we are making a modest attempt to make our show the ’Hamilton Show of the South Island,’ and we look to the fanning community to assist us as much as possible in this direction."

Mr Andrews thanked Mr Richards for his comments, and explained that as proof of the Association’s sincerity in seeking ideas for improvements, a suggestion box had from the beginning of the exhibition been placed outside the Show office to receive any constructive ideas the public might have. A committeeman was in attendance during the week, and he would be pleased to receive any suggestions and discuss them.
