Miss Joyce Smith, Auckland, is staying at the Empire. Mrs D. B. Shand, Selwyn Street, who I o.i a visit to Dunedin is expected home to-day. Mrs W. H. Helmore, formerly cf “Koromiko,” Glen-iti, is staying with Mrs F. J. Rolleston, LeCren’s Terrace.

Mr and Mrs G. A. E. Le Llevre, Akaroa, spent the week end with the Rev. Nelson Wright and Mrs Wright, Branscombe Street.

Mrs C. Buchanan, Christchurch, is the guest of Mrs W. H. Walton, Park Lane. Miss Dorothy Walton, who has returned from a trip to the Islands is visiting friends in the North Island. Miss Mary Rees, of the Belgian Congo, and special delegate of the London headquarters of the World-wide Evangelisation Crusade is on a visit to Christchurch.

Miss Nora Fleming, Selwyn Street, who has been visiting Akaroa, will oe the guest of Miss Mary’ Pearson, Christchurch, for the Rangi-ruru Old Girls’ dance. Mr and Mrs W. N. Bond, “Dunrobin,” Southland, arrived yesterday to stay with Miss Elworthy, “Pareora Cottage,” LeCren’s Terrace. Miss Mary Bond left yesterday to stay with Miss Margaret Cotterlll, Christchurch. The engagement of William Geoffrey, younger son of the Rev. W. Hornby, and Mrs Hornby, Santon, Isle of Man, and Christine, youngest daughter of the Hon. Sir James Parr, G.C.M.G., has been announced in London.

Miss Elsa M. Thomas, formerly of Christchurch, at one time secretary of the Paris branch of the Overseas League, who arrived at Auckland last week by the Rotorua, intends visiting friends and relations In the North Island before journeying south.

The engagement is announced between William Jason Maxwell Borthwick, elder son of the Hon. William and Mrs Borthwick, of 14 Wilton Crescent, London, and Elizabeth Cleveland Elworthy, daughter of Mr and Mrs Herbert Elworthy, of Craigmore, Tlmaru.

A very enjoyable evening was spent on Saturday at the residence of Mr and Mrs Gilbert Tozer, Hewllng Street, to celebrate the coming of age of their second daughter Hilda. Games and dancing were much enjoyed. Speeches were made by Messrs Peter Kidd, R. Irving and F. Tozer. The tragedy of Vaslav Nijinsky, the famous dancer, to whom modern ballet owes much, and who for many years has suffered from mental trouble which prevents him from earning a living, has inspired a group of famous people to arrange a special Nijinsky matinee at His Majesty’s Theatre, London, states an exchange. Such well-known people in the theatrical world as Anton Dolin, Edward Knoblock, and Ernest Thesiger are members of the programme committee who have undertaken to arrange for the appearance of» brilliant ballet dancers and special pas de deux and pas de quatre. The Duke and Duchess of Portland, Violet, Duchess of Rutland, the Duchess of Wellington, the Marchioness of londonderry, the Marchioness of Anglesey, the Marchioness of Carisbrooke, Lady Juliet Duff, Lady Diana Cooper, and Lady Bonham-Carter are among the scores of notable figures in London’s social life who are expressing their sympathy with Nijinsky by rallying to the support of the organisers of the matinee.
