CHARGE OF THEFT
NEWLYWED BEFORE COURT Married in Dunedin in the morning and arrested in Timaru in the evening was the fate of George Henry Ellis, who appeared before Mr H. Morgan, S.M., in the Timaru Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of the theft of a wireless set, valued at £32/10/-, the property of William Cecil Proctor. The offence was alleged to have occurred at Dunedin on June 21. Accused’s name was entered in the charge sheet as Eric Fisher, but Detective E. Thomas asked to have the name amended to George Henry Ellis. The Magistrate: Alias Fisher?
Detective Thomas: I will explain the position, sir. Accused was married at a registry office in Dunedin on Tuesday morning under the name of Eric Fisher, and he and his wife boarded the express for Timaru. On Tuesday night accused was arrested by Detective N. Kempt. There were other charges pending, and he would ask for a remand until Wednesday of next week. Accused said that he had no statement to make, nor did he intend to ask for bail. The Magistrate: There are other charges pending?
Detective Thomas: Yes, five or six. The Magistrate: They can't be brought on under a week? Detective Thomas: There are several inquiries to be made. If we can complete those inquiries we can bring the case on earlier. Some of the offences were alleged to have been committed in various towns, and we are not conversant with the full facts. A remand until Wednesday next was granted. The Magistrate said that accused had not asked for bail, but seven days was a long remand, and he would fix bail at self £lOO and one surety of £lOO or two of £5O.
