PLAYED WITH KING OF BELGIANS

Miss Pam Barton, famous young British golf star, who held the women’s championship until recently beaten by Mrs Andrew Holm, tells a good story of how she lunched and played golf with the King of the Belgians. She described round by round how they played. “It was grand,” she said. “I wasn’t a bit nervous. “We played on the Berkshire club course. The King refused to accept any strokes. “Most of the time we talked about golf, and Belgium.” Miss Barton said

that she was in good form, her pitch shots being particularly good. The King’s putting was excellent. She played with him twice, on each occasion opposing him in foursomes. In the morning she and D. Rees, the club professional, won by 4 and 2. Mr Raymond Quilter partnered the King. The afternoon match, she said, was an exciting struggle from the first hole. A superb putt of King Leopold’s at the eighteenth saved the match for him and his partner, A. J. Lacey, the Ascot professional. Through this, they finished all square. A Royal Disaster” It was the climax of the game. The King had a good drive, was on the green in two, and down with five putts. The rest took five. “The mast brilliant performance,” said Miss Barton, “was that of Lacey, who went round in 63. The King took 78, Rees 69, and myself 80. “There was a Royal Disaster at the ninth,” she recalled with a laugh. “A slightly sliced drive of the King’s resulted in his ball hiding itself in some heather. “Eventually it had to be gracefully abandoned.”
