SECRET CENSUS
COUNTING GOLFERS’ CLUBS Following the announcement that the Royal and Ancient Golf Club is considering limiting the number of golf clubs in the bag to 14, cccnes news that a secret census is being carried out in various parts of the country, reports The Field. A number of golfers are unwittingly assisting the authorities and providing data for the Spring meeting of the Rules of Golf Committee at St. Andrews. This census is not being undertaken by the national golf unions, nor by St. Andrews, but by an association in active contact with clubs. So far it has produced interesting details which will, no doubt, affect the decision of the authorities. At one well-known London golf club during a busy week-end only three golfers went out to play with more than 14 implements in their bags. From the total number of replies received to date it would appear that only one half of 1 per cent, of players use 14 clubs or more. So it would appear that a rule to limit the number of clubs is unnecessary. Certainly it would not affect the ordinary golfer. At the same time, many critics consider it is essential to tame the “tigers” in this manner, and this opinion merits consideration.
