PAY OF M.P.’s

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER. United Press Association—By Kaolrto Telegraph -Convrlght LONDON, June 22. Only a few voices were raised in opposition to Mr Chamberlain’s motion that the salaries of members of the House of Commons should be increased to £6OO, the motion being carried by 325 to 17. Mr Chamberlain said he was surprised and distressed to find many members living beyond their means, being obliged to curtail their children’s education, and actually allow themselves Insufficient food. “We don't want to fix a salary which will induce people to enter the House of Commons for the purpose of earning more than outside. On the other hand, we don't want the salary so low that men and women capable of valuable service will be prevented from entering the House of Commons.” The cost will be £112,000 yearly.
