THRILLING is how 1 would describe the 600-mile journey through the Rockies . . . and the beauty of Lake Louise and the grandeur of Banff far exceeded my expectations. / spent a day in Toronto, staying at the Royal York, which is, incidentally, the largest hotel in the British Empire. Then there was Niagara Falls, where I also stayed for a day. The illumination of the Falls at night was a sight that I’ll long remember . . . one billion three hundred and twenty million candle power of light was reflected in a manner that transformed the cataracts into a fairyland of colour From there I went to Ottawa, the capital of Canada. Standing at the junction of the Rideau and Ottawa Rivers, its site is characterised by a grandeur appropriate to its national significance. After Ottawa my next stop was at Montreal where I climbed to the top of Mount Royal and viewed the historic city in all its oulflung beauty. Although a thousand miles from the Atlantic, Montreal is one of the world’s greatest seaports. And from old Quebec, crowned by a citadel that once was impregnable, I sailed in the Great White “Empress of Britain" for Southampton. Actually England is 1248 miles nearer North America on this ocean crossing. Bat that is only half its attraction. The other half is the unforgetable two days’ sail down the broad reaches of the sheltered St. Lawrence."
