SALE OF SECOND-HAND BEDDING

To the Editor of " The Timaru Herald ’’ Sir,—Could you enlighten your readers whether there is any regulation requiring the fumigation of secondhand mattresses and pillows before they are offered for sale at auctionmarts and second-hand shops? I understand that in various North Island towns the health authorities require these articles to be fumigated before being resold. These old pillows and mattresses, without thorough fumigation, must necessarily be a source of potential danger to the purchasers One can visualise the infection of infantile paralysis or any other disease, through the non-observance of this precaution.—l am, etc., HYGIENE. Timaru, March 6. [The Health Act requires secondhand dealers and auctioneers to can-y out fumigation. It is not lawful for them to expose for sale, sell or otherwise dispose of, any second-hand clothing or bedding unless it has been cleansed by an approved process and disinfected. Before accepting such goods for sale, auctioneers and dealers make inquiries as to the source from which the goods came, and as to condition.—Editor of the “Timaru Herald.’’]
