A happy note was struck at the opening of the conference of the New Zealand Municipal Association yesterday when the president (Mr T. ‘ Jordan, Masterton), made a small presentation to Mr P. Skoglund (Stratford) on the occasion of his transfer from the position of town clerk at Stratford to the Transport Licensing Authority. Mr Skoglund was a foundation member of the Town Clerks’ Institue, and members of that organisation were associated with the conference in the presentation. Regret at the death of a very valuable servant, Colonel G. F. C. Campbell, Auditor-General, was expressed by the president (Mr T. Jordan, Masterton), at the conference of the New Zealand Municipal Association yesterday. Mr Jordan said Colonel Campbell had a longer period of service in the Public Service than any other officer in the Empire. Previously it had been discussed in the London “Times,” It being claimed that an Englishman with about 60 years had the longest record, but someone in New Zealand had taken up the cudgels and recognition had been given Colonel Campbell’s record. Conference decided to place on record its appreciation of Colonel Campbell’s valuable services and his generous assistance to local bodies. Sympathy was I extended to the relatives.
