It was on March 11, 1927, that radio station PC J, Holland, rebroadcast the chimes, which were heard in New Zealand, the date then being March 12. Heavy Sea on Coast A heavy south-westerly sea was running up the coast yesterday, and for the first time for a long while waves were noticed washing across the beach Into the Washdyke Lagoon. The position was much the same at Saltwater Creek, but the water did not bank up to any extent. Visitors Feel Cold Hot water bottles and extra blankets are in keen demand by delegates from the North Island who are attending the Municipal Conference in Timaru. Yesterday’s cold snap was keenly felt by many visitors, but in defence of Timaru’s reputation for sunshine it must be mentioned that yesterday’s conditions were fairly general. Masonic Convocation The annual convocation of the supreme Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Freemasons of New Zealand was held at Invercargill yesterday. Business proceedings occupied the morning and the installation of Colonel George Barclay as first Grand Principal took place in the evening in the presence of 200 members from all parts of New Zealand. The installing officer was Mr E. C. Smith, of Gore. Warrants of Fitness The Minister of Transport has decided that motor-cycle dealers may be approved for the purpose of issuing warrants of fitness for motor-cycles. No motor-cycle dealer will, however, be approved for this purpose unless as a result of an inspection by an officer of the Transport Department his premises are found to be suitable for testing motor-cycles. Any motor-cycle dealer desiring to be authorised to issue warrants of fitness for motor-cycles is required to forward an application for the inspection of his premises, together with the fee of £1 to the Commissioner of Transport, Wellington. Winchester Show Advising that he would be unable to attend the Diamond Jubilee Show of the Temuka and Geraldine A. and P. Association, the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. W. Lee Martin) has telegraphed the secretary (Mr W. F. Evans) as follows:—-“On March 20 I shall 'be with the Hon. R. Semple carrying out an inspection of the roads in the Raglan district, so regret exceedingly am unable to accept kind invitation from the Temuka and Geraldine Agricultural and Pastoral Association to be their guest. I hope to enjoy their hospitality on another occasion and send best wishes for a very successful show.’ Railway Layout on Wharves The Rev. Clyde Carr, M.P.. has received the following telegram from the Minister of Railways (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan): “I shall be travelling from Dunedin to Christchurch by special train to-morrow, and shall be pleased to make a short stop of about half an hour at Timaru to inspect the railway layout on the wharves. You will understand, I am sure, that as I am on the train it will be necessary for me to adhere to a schedule, and I presume this will be the only business, and that other matters that are perhaps less urgent will remain over until my official visit to your electorate. I will advise you later of times of arrival and departure." Divorce and Re-marriage The Oamaru Presbytery considered the Presbyterian General Assembly’s suggested rules for the guidance of ministers—<l) That in a case of divorce for insanity, the same party may be re-married; (2) that in a case of divorce for failure to comply with an order for the restitution of conjugal rights, or for three years’ separation, neither party shall be remarried. A suggestion made by the Rev. H. H. Barton was adopted. This stated that in other cases, while maintaining in a general way the Church’s testimony and disapproving of re-marriage in the case of the guilty party to a divorce or of those whose divorce had been granted on grounds which the Church holds to be inadequate, the Church recognises that In some cases there are factors making it desirable for some discretionary power to be left in the hands of officiating ministers. It was recommended that Presbyteries appoint either a special committee or the existing judicial committee to guide ministers in making a decision, such decision to be final.
