TEMUKA

RETURNED SOLDIERS’ ASSOCIATION HOSPITAL SCHEME Enthusiastic support for a scheme of free hospital treatment on payment of 30/- annually by financial members, outlined in a letter from Dominion Headquarters, was given by the committee of the Temuka Returned Soldiers’ Association at its monthly meeting on Monday evening. The letter stated that schemes of the type were already operating successfully at Dannevirke and Hokitika and that the scheme would be closely akin to that of the United Friendly Societies. Mr W. Oldfield said he had mentioned the matter to a number of members he had met and they had all been enthusiastic in their support of the proposal.

Mr W. F. Evans mentioned that ths suggested annual fee of 30/- was exceptionally low.

The chairman remarked that the South Canterbury Hospital Board should be approached before anything further was done and that it might be wise for the branch to get into touch with the other South Canterbury branches. It was agreed, on the motion cf Mr Evans, to support the proposal and to write to all South Canterbury branches with a view to a combined move being made. President’s Report The president reported that the wood committee had inspected the wood on the riverbed and several members of the executive had travelled to Temuka for a meeting with Mr B. Jacobs, Dominion vice-president. A deputation had waited on the Minister of Public Works and endeavoured to have men placed in work. Although they could not be placed immediiately, there was a possibility of them getting work when it was available. Members’ subscriptions were coming to hand well. Pension cases had been dealt with during the month. On behalf of the Temuka District High School, Dr. F. A. Scannell wrote stating that the names of ex-soldier pupils who had had distinguished records were required for inclusion on the school honours’ board. The committee decided to secure a record of all ex-soldiers earning decorations from headquarters and to go through the list with a view to securing additional names to those already forwarded to the School Committee on a previous occasion. The financial membership ladder showed Temuka to be thirty-seventh with 137 members, as compared with 170 at the same period of last year. The figures were those at December 31. The vice-president, Mr C. D. Hayhurst, wrote tendering his resignation on account of indifferent health.
