SOUTHERN FOOTBALL CLUB ANNUAL REPORT In the report to be presented to the annual meeting of the Southern Football Club. ’Congratulations are extended to the senior team on winning last year’s competition and the Reilly Cup. It was regretted that the club’s juniors could not field a team. Several players gained reprbsenative honours. Although defeated by the Waimate team in the Burnett Shield match, the Southern senior team played well. The game against Temuka last Easter required mentioned because of the hospitality of the Temuka people. The committee regrets the misfortune the club suffered by losing the services of Jack Fife, a promising young player, who broke a leg in the first match of the season. The club was represented in the Mackenzie team by C. Hanham. A. Woods, T. Wills, A. Smith, A. Campbell, and D. Rodgers. During the season a benefit dance was held for the injured players, and was well supported by the public. The special thanks of the club were due to Mr O. S. Loder, who so competently acted as coach. W. O'Reilly for transport. Mrs Gibson (patroness l Mr D. Fraser (president), and “The Timaru Herald.” ATHLETIC CLUB A decision not to hold an afternoon meeting this season was made by the executive committee of the Fairlie Cycle and Athletic Club on Tuesday night. Mr John Macdonald presided. It was considered that the time for an afternoon meeting passed when the club postponed the fixture because of the infantile paralysis epidemic. The difficulty of fixing a suitable date and the lateness of the season, were also mentioned. Although the evening meetings closed for the season on Tuesday night, it was decided that if there was sufficient support a few cycle road races could still be held.

A deputation from the Mackenzie Collie Club consisting of Messrs C. Hayter (president), J. Willetts and W. Mackintosh, waited on the committee with regard to the sports programme at the trials on Saturday afternoon •Members of the committee agreed to run the sports and to assist the Co< ie Club in any way necessary for the successful conduct of that part of its programme. MACKENZIE COLLIE TRIALS Arrangements for the Mackenzie Collie Club’s annual district trials and sports to be held to-morrow and on Saturday, are now well forward. As Burke’s Pass is only 11 miles from Fairlie and 50 from Timaru, with the choice of a round trip from Albury through the Rollesby Valley, it is expected that on Saturday in particular, for which a varied and interesting sports programme has been prepared, many people from all over South Canterbury will visit the trials. Luncheon and afternoon tea will be available on the grounds, and in addition there will be picnic facilities. In the early days of the Mackenzie i Country, the trials were one of the year’s important events, and people travelled from the furthermost parts of the back country to be present. Some years ago the trials were discontinued, and they are being revived this year in a belief that similar interest and support will again be evident.
