WOMEN’S DIVISION

TIMARU BRANCH At the monthly meeting of the Timaru branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union Miss Cargill presided over a large attendance of members. A motion expressing sympathy with Mrs A. Copland in the illness of her husband was passed and the secretary instructed to write a letter expressing the members’ sympathy to Mrs Copland and family.

A welcome was extended to the following new members. — Mesdames Bunting, Dickie and Shaw. Miss Mackie the newly appointed Division dressmaker was also welcomed. Mrs Hayhurst the division delegate on the National Council of Women read the following remit “that the National Council of Women urge on participate In what is a necessity.” On reduction in the telephone charge to allow a greater number of people to praictipate in what is a necessity.” On the motion of Mrs Evans seconded by Mrs Harvey it was agreed to send the remit forward to the provincial executive of the Women’s Division to support.

Arrangements for the social evening to be held at the Bay Hall during the Otago farmers visit were discussed. The following branches will assist the Timaru branch at the social.—Pleasant Point, Kingsdown and Otaio. The following delegates were appointed to meet the members of the Farmers’ Union on Friday to discuss final arrangements in connection with the visit.—Mesdames P. .R. Talbot, B. Evans, J. Caird, Misses Cargill and Moyle. Mrs McLeod reminded members of the competition to best dinner table at the Fairlie show. After discussion it was decided not to compete this year. Mrs Youdale gave a very useful talk on home nursing. On the motion of Mrs McLeod. Mrs Youdale was accorded a vote of thanks for her interesting and instructive address. Competitions resulted as follows.— Jar preserved' apricots: Miss J. Devan 1. Bloom: Miss J. Devan 1, Mrs W. Purvis 2. Handkerchief: Miss J. Devan I, Mrs W. Purvis 2. Bowl flowers: Miss J. Devan 1
