PEEL FOREST
SOCIAL EVENING A social evening in honour of Miss B. Johnstone, whose marriage takes place shortly, was held in the Peel Forest Hall. The function, which was organised by Mrs W. Inglis and Mrs A. Keen, was most successful, about 100 friends and well-wishers being present. Miss Johnstone received a large number of handsome and useful gifts. During the evening Mr O. Keen on behalf of those present, wished the guest of honour every success and happiness. Mr G. Smith returned thanks on behalf of Miss Johnston. Dancing was indulged in to a late hour, the music being provided by Messrs J. and W. Chapman. Extras were played by Mrs E. Matheson, Messrs F. Heney, and A. Brown (bagpipes). The winners of the novelty dances were: Lucky spot daltz, Mr and Mrs B. Bates; Monte Carlo, Mr F. Claydon and Mrs W. Inglis; first couple on the floor, Mr Chapman and Miss Harris. Mr O. Keen was M.C. FISHING Although the Rangitata cleared sufficiently by Friday for fishing, very poor sport was obtained on the upper reaches over the week-end. On Saturday a strong nor’wester set in, and made fishing conditions very difficult. At present there does not appear to be many salmon in the deep pools. Apparently the large run which set in at the end of last month has passed on up stream while the river was dirty. The river late on Sunday was rising, but had not become discoloured to any extent. On Monday morning the river was much the same, and as colder weather had set in fishing conditions should improve during the week.
