WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

KIMBELL There was a moderate attendance at the fifth annual meeting of the Kimbell Women's Institute. Mrs J. Ireland presided and referred to the services rendered to the Institute movement in New Zealand, by the late Mrs Bibby, whose high ideals and loyalty to the cause had found expression in the beautiful words ‘‘Comrades and Friends.” A motion of sympathy with the relatives was moved, members standing in silence as a mark of respect. The general progress made, and the healthy state of the finances, were reflected in the annual report and balance-sheet, which were read and adopted. Various matters of a minor nature were brought forward and discussed. It was unanimously decided to defer consideration of the pamphlet on Immigration until a future date. A message was received from a sick member, and general regret expressed at her prolonged illness. Votes of thanks were accorded Mrs Keenan for presenting the aggregate prize for the •'bloom,” and to Mrs Paterson for her assistance in connection with the community quilt. Giving it as her opinion that it was for the good of the Institute, that all members capable of holding office, be encouraged to do so, Mrs Ireland declined nomination for a further period. She thanked members for their loyalty and assistance, and appealed for support for her successor. Members generally expressed regret at Mrs Ireland’s decision, but commended the motive which had prompted it. Mrs Waters was thereupon elected to fill the vacancy, and took the chair amidst applause. She thanked members for the honour conferred on her, and assured them of her best efforts on their behalf.

Mrs Goulter asked to be relieved-of her duties as Press correspondent and Mrs Green w.as appointed. Mrs Waters spoke in appreciative terms of the good work of the retiring president, and presented her with a book and a posy.

Miss Durant congratulated Mrs Fraser on the efficient manner in which she had discharged her numerous duties as secretary and handed her a shrub and a posy. Both recipients suitably replied. A dainty afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Allan and Burgess. Competitions resulted as follows: Collection of annuals: Mrs Munro 1, Mrs Baron 2. Premier bloom, Mrs Fraser 1, Miss Fraser 2. OTIPUA The annual meeting of the Otipua Women’s Institute was held last week, Mrs Vincent presiding over a record number of members.
