"Bishops arc paid a compliment when compared with branch managers of a multiple store,” writes Dr. Wilson, Bishop of Chelmsford, in a letter to his diocese. “Such stores give good value and are efficient. Branch-manager bishops are. needed in at least half of the English dioceses. “Bishops have less power now than 50 years ago. Church legislation has seen to that. “If Bishops do not speak out, they are asked why they do not give a lead. If they do, howls of indignation arise —’Why don’t they mind their own business?’ “If bank managers were paid a salary covering all the overhead costs of the bank premises, cashiers and clerks’ salaries, and messengers and servants, it would appear that they were rich men. "Yet that is how bishops are paid.” ’
