SUDDEN DEATH

FINDING AT INQUEST The sudden death of Thomas Shaw, aged 46, of Kerrytown, a labourer employed by the Public Works Department at Rangitata, who expired an hour after his admission to a Timaru private hospital on Friday afternoon, was investigated by the Coroner (Mr H. Morgan) yesterday. Sergeant Vaughan conducted the proceedings for the police. Dr. c. S. Fraser stated that Shaw and his wife consulted him about 3.30 p.m. on Friday at his rooms, believing he was suffering from asthma. About 10 o’clock that morning he had consulted a Geraldine doctor, who ordered him into hospital, but he refused to go and it was only after considerable persuasion he agreed to enter the institution. He gave Shaw an injection of adrenalin and morphia, which seemed to improve his condition, and helped him out to the car. The patient died in hospital an hour later. A post-mortem examination revealed that death, in his opinion, was due to oedema of the glottis due to a growth on the larynx.

A verdict in accordance with medical testimony was returned by the Coroner. :
