VERDICT OF SUICIDE
PAREORA RESIDENT’S DEATH A verdict that Willem Koens, aged 65, committed suicide by hanging while in a depressed state of mind, was returned by the Coroner (Mr H. Morgan) at the inquest into his death yesterday. Sergeant Vaughan conducted the proceedings for the police. The widow, Catherine Koens, said that until January her husband had been employed at the Pareora Freezing Works. He had experienced bad health for the last 18 months, since he had a nervous breakdown. After losing his employment, her husband had appeared depressed and was unable to sleep. He once remarked, a few days before his death “Life is not worth living.” Two days before his death he was very restless. On Saturday, February 27, her husband announced his intention of having his hair cut, but when he did not return for two hours she became anxious, and on making a search she found him hanging in the garage. She immediately let the body down and applied artificial respiration. Her husband had been under medical attention for some time past.
