MRS PATRICK CASEY The oldest resident of the Gapes Valley district, Mrs Patrick Casey, died in the Timaru Hospital last Saturday morning, aged 81. Mrs Casey was bom in Skibbreen, County Cork, Ireland, and came to New Zealand at an early age in a sailing vessel which took 16 weeks on the passage. She landed at Port Chalmers, subsequently removing to Pleasant Valley, then to Kakahu, and back to Timaru, remaining there until her marriage. She was married more than 50 years ago to Mr Patrick Casqy in the Geraldine Catholic Church by the Rev. Father Keane. The young couple took up residence on a farm at Gapes Valley and remained there all their lives. She had many friends all through life and was always willing to give assistance if needed. Her husband predeceased her four and a-half years ago. She is survived by her only son, Mr Patrick Casey, who now occupies his parents’ farm at Gapes Valley. The funeral took place at Geraldine on Monday morning and was largely attended, friends from long distances showing their respect. The Rev. Father Fogarty celebrated the Requiem Mass and officiated at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs P. Lyons sen.,P. Lyons jun., H. Burns and P. Casey.
