The Englishmen began to-day a twoday match against a Victorian country side. The match was commenced on a perfect wicket amid beautiful ground surroundings. The Englishmen scored 344 runs in 246 minutes, batting 12 men. A feature was the total of 104 in 158 minutes by Fishlock in the first innings since he broke a hand at Adelaide before the fourth test there. Hammond made a most artistic 53 in 60 minutes. Voce and Allen were associated in a last wicket stand of 80, made in 40 minutes, Voce making 53 not out in 50 minutes. Each scored a six and each was in good form. Fishlock's form indicated that it was likely that he would have been troublesome in the tests if he had not been injured. England in the first innings made 344 (Fishlock 104, Hammond 53, Voce, not out 53, Allen 33, Worthington 26, Ccpson 19). Uneebone took four wickets for 63 runs, Adams three for 74, McDonald, two for 91. The country team has lost two wickets for 29 runs (Davidson not out 2D.
