CHEQUE RECEIVED
WISHES OF LORD NUFFIELD Yesterday the Mayor (Mr P. C. Vinnell) received a cheque from Lord Nuffield for £l2OO. being Timaru’s portion of the gift of £51,700 announced a few days ago. In his letter Lord Nuffield says: “On this, my fourth visit to New Zealand, it is. my desire to make some further contribution to its charitable enterprises, and it appears to me, after considerable thought, In consultation with Mr C. J. B. Norwood, that the manner in which I may most equitably do so is to seek the co-operation of the Mayors of the cities, towns, and districts concerned. I am enclosing, herewith, a cheque for £l2OO, which I shall be grateful if you will distribute amongst the charities which you consider to be the most needy and deserving in your town and suburbs.
“While I am anxious that this distribution shall be made at your sole and absolute discretion, it is my wish that prior consideration may be given to such causes as crippled children, hospital and maternity work, and those suffering from such afflictions as blindness, deafness and dumbness.”
