LOW PRESSURE IN WATER MAINS CONSIDERATION BY COUNCIL The problem of supplying a greater water pressure to the borough has been under consideration for some time, said the Mayor (Mr G. Dash), when the comments passed at the annual meeting of the Fire Brigade that the pressure was insufficient for fire fighting purposes was referred to him. A comprehensive report had been prepared by the Town Clerk (Mr B. S. Runciman), and the chairman of the Water Committee (Mr W. G. Paul), together with a commentary by himself. This report, he said, had been held up pending the receipt of technical data, but would be submitted to the Council shortly.

Mr Dash went on to say that points under consideration were the provision of adequate pressure for fire prevention, and also guarding against a possible shortage in times of extreme drought. When used for domestic purposes only tjje pressure would still be as good as at any time since the supply had existed.

Mr Runciman stated that tire reservoir, which held 500.000 gallons, was connected with the town by a six-inch main which ran to the end of Belt Street, from which ran distributaries of three and four inches to the rest of the town. When the pressure was low, which might happen, say, after a drought of three weeks, the water would be used as fast as it was entering the reservoir. Usually, however, there was sufficient water for all needs. The only explanation for low pressure when fire occurred at night was the prohibited practice of leaving hoses on all night to water gardens. CRICKET The following will play the representative team: Hicks, Buckett, Keyes. Sawell, McCormack, R. Fleming, Wright, R. Keen, J. Finlayson, Granger and Stevens. PRIMARY SCHOOL A correspondence course may be instituted for the pupils of the Waimate primary school from Monday next. The pupils will at least be expected to do a certain amount of study at home, using the School Journal as a basis for reading, comprehension and English exercises. DOUBTFUL FISHING PROSPECTS Probably on account of the heavy rain in the back country, the Waitaki yesterday was running high and fairly dirty, and appeared to be still rising, which does not promise well for weekend anglers. SHORTAGE OF MECHANICS In conversation with a reporter, the Placement Officer for North Otago and Waimate said that there was a universal demand for A class motor mechanics. Several were required at Waimate, but none was available. There also was a shortage of farm labour, particularly teamsters. PERSONAL Firemen G. Crawford, F. Horler, J. Sauer, J. Flaherty, and H. Walker, who are to represent the Waimate Volunteer Fire Brigade at the demonstrations in Nelson next week, left yesterday afternoon. REBEKAH LODGE At the fortnightly meeting of the Te Waimate Rebekah Lodge, Sister E. Peck, N.G., presided over a good’ rttendance.
