VISITORS TO UNITED KINGDOM AND INCOME TAX

Sir, —No doubt many of your readers are contemplating a visit to the Old Country this year for the Coronation celebrations and some of them may be wondering what their position will be from the point of view of British Income Tax. I am constantly coming into contact with visitors from all parts of the world and frequently find it necessary to dispel erroneous impressions which are popular abroad concerning the Income Tax position of persons visiting the United Kingdom. To put the matter very briefly a person does not normally render himself liable for Income Tax unless: (a) He maintains a residence in the United Kingdom, or (b) Visits for more than one hundred and eighty-two days in any financial year, i.e., 6th April to the following sth April, or (c) Visits this country habitually spending, say, three months on an average here every year—l am, etc., WILFRED T.
