Mackay, a racing journalist from Johannesburg, gave 525 guineas, and Mr Oswald Tyson 800 guineas for Gay Lothario colts. J. T. Jamieson paid 500 guineas for a Windbag colt and Mr W. Longworth 210 guineas for a Gaine Carrington colt.

On the first day at Woodville, Courtcraft 8.1 beat Son and Heir 7.13 by a length, and apparently was about 101 b better of the pair. On the second day Smoke Screen 9.5 beat Son and Heir 8.5 by over six lengths and seemed to be at least 241 b superior. At Trentham, Smoke Screen has to give Courtcraft only 51b, and looks to have the best of the figures. But Courtcraft cost 1200gns and has been boomed accordingly.

The New Brighton Trotting Club received 81 nominations for its Challenge Stakes to be held in the spring of 1938. Run over a mile and a quarter, the Challenge Stakes will provide a trial for the New Zealand Derby, to be' decided at Addington some weeks later. Sires are represented as follows:—Jack Potts 22, Grattan Loyal 13, Wrack 10, and Truman Direct 7. Man o’ War, Travis Axworthy, and Great Bingen have four each.
