March 18 or 20—Wyndham T.C. March 27, 29, 31—Metropolitan T.C The Napier Park meeting will open to-day. • • • • Weights for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps will appear on Monday. Kylemure, who has been nominated for hunters’ events in Southland, is a brother to Faculties. R. Beale has been engaged to ride Nocturnus, Faculties and Golden Lap at the Birchwood Hunt meeting. Mr F. Johnson, owner’of Toreador, has purchased the Rosenor mare Gipsy Fair. C. T. Wilson will ride Last Refrain. Rose of Tralee, Invoice and Notava at Motukarara. He will steer Epris and Last Refrain at Trentham next week. The two-year-old Happy Knight, who was unluckily beaten at Dunedin, will be In strong demand for the novice event at Motukarara on Saturday. Trisox was lame after his win at Winton, but it is expected that he will be ready to contest the steeplechases at Riverton.

The V.R.C. Autumn meeting will be continued to-day. The main events are the Ascot Vale Stakes, of £l5OO, for two-year-olds, and the River Handicap, of £7OO, It miles.

There are 23 acceptors for the novice event at Motukarara. The “safety number’’ for the course is 19, and unless there are some scratchings a division may be required.

Faculties had to be eased up after the Winton meeting, as a result of a barb-wire cut on a fetlock, but he is being got ready for the Birchwood meeting.

The Tasmanian mare Evicus, who ran badly in the final of the Ad’lalcie “championships,” allegedly owing to being doped, has recovered, and is shortly to return to New Zealand.

After winning the Pafaki Hurdles at Opunake Bazaine was produced in the Flying Handicap, a couple of races later, and secured second money behind the topweight Lady Kyra

Horses entered for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps which have been nominated for Riverton are: Gold Boa, Travenna, Kinnoull, Rebel Lad, Osculate, Dollar Bill, Great Star, and Viking.

Paper Slipper has performed so badly on two trips to Trentham this season that he cannot be recommended for the Thompson Handicap. If the race were to be run at Wingatui, Paper Slipper would be one of the favourites. The death of Mr F. Cowie occurred in Invercargill on Sunday morning after a short illness. Deceased, who was president of the Winton Jockey Club, was In attendance at that club's annual meeting about a week earlier. Silver Ring won the Thompson Handicap last year with 10.6, the minimum being 7.0. This year he has again been allotted 10.6 on a 7.7 minimum, but his racing in Australia suggested that he had lost some of his dash. Master Brierley’s win In the Herries Cup at Te Aroha was his first since he collected two w.f.a. races at Rindwick nearly two years ago. Three fur'ongs from home he was last in a strungout field, and a long way back, but he finished with a brilliant run to win by a head.

The peculiar looking name of the Southland gelding Trebleack (pronounced Treble-ack) is a morse code one, and is understood when it is mentioned that his dam is Morse Signal. This mare produced also Signaller and Miss Fleetham (dam of The Smuggler). Trebleack won his first race early in January, and ran out of the hack class in less than two months. He has been nominated for the Riverton Cup. Padishah, who was unsuccessful on his last trip to Sydney, has been taken up after a spell, and is to go through a preparation for winter racing. Included in his programme will be the Great Northern Hurdles and S'.copies. This half-brother to Cuddle has not raced over the fences, but he has done far more schooling than many who have contested a dozen jumping races, and he has shown much promise. There were only five starters in the Essendon Stakes, the first day w.f.a. race at Flemington. Four of these were bred in New Zealand and they finished first, second, third and fourth. In the King’s Plate (13 miles) on the second day, the three starters were till New Zealand bred, while Cape York, another New Zealander, won the principal distance handicap. Yet some Australian writers persist in disparaging references to New Zealand form. Unfortunately, Australian handicappers take the opposite view, and luckily Australian buyers do the same.

In face of all the predictions that the Government intended to legalise bookmaking in New Zealand, it can be stated with some confidence that this is now farther off than ever. If any alteration in the existing gaming laws is made within the next year or two, it is more likely to follow the French system of betting agencies. A corollary of this system is drastic action to suppress unlicensed Darting and some of those people who not long ago were optimistic regarding the future of bookmaking are now almost resigned to the possibility of its extinction.
