A MAORI’S DEATH
CORONER SUSPICIOUS By Teiperanh Pres? Association PALMERSTON N., November 27. The inquest ./as concluded to-day into the death of Taitoke Te Matai, aged 70, of Mangawhata, who died in a private hospital on November 11. A verdict that death was due to coma caused by cerebral compression following a head injury accidentally received was returned. The Coroner said the evidence was very conflicting. He had not the slightest doubt that the cause of death was contributed to in an altercation at Te Matai’s residence. From the evidence regarding the statement he made to the doctor, a very grave suspicion arose that the cause of death was a blow received in an altercation. That was contradicted by other witnesses, but in his (the Coroner’s) judgment he was inclined to believe that the injury was suffered through a blow on the head, but he did not think it was given with any intention of causing the grave injury which resulted.
