PRIMARY SCHOOLS

ATHLETIC SPORTS SPLENDID CONTESTS All the primary schools in Timaru, and a number of country schools engaged in athletic contests on Fraser Park on Saturday. Similar contests have been held in previous years, but on this occasion the South Canterbury Primary Schools’ Sports Association conducted the events on an organised basis over measured tracks, with times and distances being recorded. Some particularly fine contests were witnessed, close finishes, being the order of the day. The attendance of the public was only moderate, and it was disappointing to those concerned that parents did not evince keener interest in the proceedings. The event fosters a spirit of healthy rivalry, and the children entered into the contests wholeheartedly, each doing his or her best not for the sakd of individual honour, but for the honour of their school. The competition in the championship, for which a shield was at stake, was restricted to three entrants from each school. The town section contests were conducted on a tabloid basis, in which teams of eight competed, in broad jump, hop, step and jump, 75 yards, and relay events the times of the placed and slowest of each school in the 75 yards and relay events were averaged and points awarded on this basis. Handicaps were allotted to the school in proportion to the roll number. The country schools’ contests were conducted in two sections, B representing the larger institutions and C the sole charge schools, whose pupils competed for the Herbert Smith Trust Cups. Disappointment was felt by officials of the Association at the poor competition from country schools in view, of the special efforts made in framing the programme to provide for country pupils. The competition for the athletic shield resulted:— Waimataitai, 474 points .. 1 Main, 43 points 2 ■ West, 38 points 3 The B section, country schools, was won by Pareora East with 755 points, Washdyke being second and Clandeboye 3. The C section was won by Salisbury with 70 joints, Tycho being second and Cannnigton 3. At the conclusion of the sports Mr R. Allan expressed thanks on behalf of the Association to officials who had come from Dunedin to help them, to the teachers and to members of the Amateur Athletic Association for their valuable help. The cups were presented by Mr E. D. Mcßae, president of the Amateur Athletic Association, who congratulated the children on their splendid performances. The schools represented by the winners are denoted by the following abbreviations: Waimataitai, W; Main, M; West, West; South, S; High School, H.S. Sacred Heart, S.H.
