CHEESE CUP

HARBOUR BOARD COMPETITION TROPHY PRESENTED TO CLOVERLEA The presentation of the challenge cup for the annual cheese competition amongst dairy factories in South Canterbury took place at yesterday's meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board, when representatives of the Cloverlea Factory (Temuka), which had secured the highest grade of cheese, were present to receive the trophy. The company representatives were Messrs J. F. Cairns (chairman Of directors), G. Johnston (Manager), A. Johnson and C. C. Stanley (directors). It was the second occasion on which the cup had been presented, said the chairman (Mr T. B. Garrick). Last year the Milford Dairy Co. annexed the cup out of four competitors and this year the Cloverlea Dairy Co. had been successful out of three competitors. He understood the Cloverlea Dairy Co. had recently started operations, and the Board wished to congratulate it on its success, and also the manager (Mr Jchnston). It gave him pleasure to hand over the cup to the Cloverlea Co. and a. miniature cup to the manager. Mr Cairns thanked the Board for the great Interest it had taken in the grade of cheese. The company was pleased to have placed a new concern on the map. All factories In the competition graded very high and the district was fortunate in having such a high standard. “As far as quality Is concerned South Canterbury has nothing to fear,” said Mr Cairns, who paid tribute to the splendid work of the managers and also the good work of the Milford factory which had not been eligible for the competition. He congratulated the Board on its foresight and the part played by Mr A. R. Guild, a member of the Board. Mr Guild spoke of the keen rivalry that existed between the companies, and the friendly spirit that characterised the competition.
