WOMEN’S DIVISION

CANNINGTON BRANCH At the fourth birthday party of the Cannington Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, the school room was tastefully decorated with bowls of spring flowers. The president, Mrs Squire, extended a hearty welcome to the large attendance of members and visitors present. Birthday greetings were received from Ma \.aro Women’s Division, and Mt. Nessing Women’s Institute, who were unable to send representatives. Brisk business was done at the sales table which was ably conducted by Mrs Thompson and Mrs Sugrue, and the sum of 30/- will be sent to the Christmas cheer fund for the lepers at Makogai Two girls were elected to attend the educational week being held in Timaru. Members were reminded of Miss Macmillan’s and Miss B. Apple’s visit to Cave on October 13, and it was hoped that as many as possible would attend to ensure a successful afternoon. Mrs B. Howell kindly offered to have the Division at her residence for the October meeting. The very fine programme arranged by Miss Lilian Macdonald and party (Timaru) for the social hour was one of the most enjoyable the Division has had. Mrs Squire expressed the appreciation of the Division and a hearty vote of thanks was carried by acclamation. The following programme was presented—Pianoforte duet, “Invitation to the Dance,” Miss Alyth Begg and Miss Macdonald; vocal solos, “Spring Carol” and “Garden of Happiness,” Miss Marie Campbell; musical monologue, “Boots and Kate of the Underground,” Miss Barbara Mclnnes; vocal solos, “Who is Sylvia” and “Sweet Mystery of Life,” Mr Len Firkin; pianoforte solos, “Anvil Chorus” and “Hungarian Dance,” Miss Alyth Begg; vocal duets, “Home to our Mountains” and “The Keys of Heaven,” Miss Campbell and Mr Firkin. At the conclusion of the programme afternoon tea was served by the following hostesses: Mrs Lamb and Miss Lamb and Mrs Campbell and Miss Campbell. The four candles on the birthday cake were lit by the following representatives, who spoke on behalf of their districts. —Mrs Dale (Maungati), Mrs Rich (Cave), Mrs Kelland (Fairview) and Miss Appleby (Omarama). The candles were blown out by the first Division baby, Master George Howell. Mrs B. Evans then cut the cake and congratulated the Canning ton Division on the splendid support and consideration the members gave the president on every occasion. Mrs Squire, assured the Division of her best efforts always on their behalf. Miss Ford, of Maungati, gave a very interesting demonstration on marquetry, being closely followed with interest by the members. Miss Ford had some useful and pretty samples of her art on view and a vote of thanks was passed by acclamation.
