ROADS DAMAGED

IRRIGATION WORK BLAMED LEVELS COUNTY COUNCIL A complaint that the operations of; the Public Works Department in carrying out irrigation works at Kerrytown had left the county roads in a bad state of repair was made by the chairman (Mr T. B. Garrick) at a meeting of the Levels County Council yesterday. Present: Messrs R. G. Clelland, T. W. Brosnahan and R. W. Munro. Mr Garrick said a number of the roads in that district had been interfered with by the irrigation scheme. “I consider, and I think I am right, that as the roads were in very good order before the scheme started, it is a fair thing that the Public Works Deportment should put them right. Some of the roads are now too narrow.” Mr Brosnahan agreed that it was only reasonable for the Department to restore the roads to proper order. Mr T. G. Beck, resident Public Works Department engineer, had informed him that he thought he would have to move Foley’s Road over. Also the Department had left no culverts and something would have to be done. “If we get a heavy fall of rain, it would be impossible to go over those roads. If there were no culverts, there would be five or six feel of water over the road.” It was agreed to write to the Public Works Department asking them to restore the roads to a good state of repair. Speeding Through Washdyke The Washdyke Progress League wrote drawing attention to the dangerous manner in which many motorists drove through Washdyke and asking the Council to fix a speed limit for the residential part of the township. It was stated that several motorists travelled through at 60 miles an hour, endangering the lives of residents, especially children. The chairman said he thought the speed limit was now fixed by the Minister. Mr Brosnahan pointed out that the 30 miles an hour limit fixed by the Minister applied only to a town and Washdyke was not a town, as for instance, Pleasant Point, was. Mr Clelland drew attention to a dangerous comer at Washdyke where a side road entered the main highway. It was decided to erect three sign boards, setting a 30 miles an hour speed limit. A request for the erection of four bridges over the Seadown drain, on the properties of Messrs S. Brown, A. Ross, J. Donald and Mrs Pearce, was made by the Washdyke Branch of the Crown I Tenants’ Association. It was stated that it was understood the bridges were promised when permission for the work was granted, and their absence caused considerable inconvenience, especially when shingle was needed. The Association would appreciate ' the Council’s cleaning the drain and completing it so as to increase its efficiency. Mr Brosnahan said that no promise had been made regarding the bridges. It was decided to advise that the work did not come within the Council s jurisdiction.

Financial Statement The chairman reported that the debit balance at July 29 was £3942 2s 9d, and expenditure during the month amounting to £1024 10s Bd, plus unpresen f ad cheques left a total debit of £5059 15s 3d. Receipts since last meeting amounted to £2744 8s lOd and an unpresented cheque gave a total credit of £2748 7s lid. The debit balance at the bank at the first of the month was £2311 7s 4d, which with accounts to be passed for payment £1412 4s 2d, left a total debit of £3723 Us 6d. A subsidy of £5 was granted the Pleasant Point branch of the South Canterbury Returned Soldiers’ Association for unemployed labour. The tenders of M. J. Walsh (£9O 12s 6d) and Robert Kydd (£93 15s) for the supply of screened river gravel were tender of F. G. Sheed (£133 63 8d) for the supply of 500 cubic yards of screened surfacing gravel was accepted. It was decided to recondition an old traction engine at a cost of approximately £350.
