BOROUGH AFFAIRS MEETING OF COUNCIL The Waimate Borough Council met on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr Geo. Dash). Crs. J. Atwill, T. Twomey, P. G. Berry, G. R. Watters and W. G. Paul. The Waimate Plunket Society aid the Salvation Arm;’ Band were granted the usual subsidies. The Mayor reported that while tn Wellington recently he had interviewed the Justice Department in an endeavour to have the fence at the Courthouse removed. He had stated that the Council would remove the fence at no cost to the Department. He had also asked that electric lighting and heating be installed in the Courthouse and had interviewed the Hon. R. Semple about it. Another request he had put forward was for houses on the grounds near the police station for members of the force. The Town Clerk reported that the roof over the Borough Council office had been leaking during the recent wet weather, and on investigation it had been found that the spouting was rusted through and the roofing iron perished. The necessary repairs were authorised. The Town Clerk also reported that the 40-hour week commenced that day' and it was decided that the Council’s staff work a five-day week with the men necessary for Saturday morning duties to have the half day off during the week. It was decided that the office staff also have a live-day week but with slightly longer hours. The Town Clerk reported that .or the four-weekly period just passed the Council had paid out in subsidy in unemployed labour £l6/16/6, of which £5/2/6 w’ould be refunded by the Domain Board, school and hospital. The cost of the scheme to date from June 1 was £79/19/6. FIRE BRIGADE PRESENTATION TO MEMBER After the meeting of the Waimate Fire Brigade on Tuesday evening opportunity was taken by the members to present Fireman J. Flaherty with a fruit bowl in view of his approaching marriage. Captain Willetts said it gave him great pleasure to present the small taken of goodfellowship on behalf of the brigade. He referred to Fireman Flaherty’s good service and loyalty to the brigade, and wished him every success and happiness in the step he was taking. Lieutenant Englefield, Junior Fireman Riacli, Secretary Nash, and Mr McMaster and Firemen Sauer and Mewburn also spoke, endorsing the remarks of Captain Willetts. Fireman Flaherty thanked the members for their kind remarks and the present, which, he said, was very much appreciated. HUNTER TENNIS CLUB ANNUAL DANCE About 200 couples were present at the Olympia Hall on Tuesday evening on the occasion of the Hunter Tennis Club’s annual dance, and the success of the function reflects credit on the committee responsible for the organisation. Music was provided by a Dunedin orchestra and extras were played by a local orchestra. Messrs T. Stevens and Harvey acted as masters of ceremonies. Several novelty dances were held during the evning, the prize winners being: Monte Carlo, Miss Bowler and Mr Hanifin; lucky spot. Miss Neale and Mr Tiffen; box of chocolates, Mrs Hynes; lucky ticket, Miss Ryder. VITAL STATISTICS The vital statistics for August were: Births 13, deaths 8, marriages 8. The figures for the eight months ended August 31 (last year’s figures in parentheses) are as follow: Births 93 (70), deaths 44 (36), marriages 41 (30). Procters, The Opticians.
