TO-DAY’S GAME AT FRASER PARK SOUTH CANTERBURY v. NORTH AUCKLAND In the first match their Union has ever played In Timaru, the North Auckland representative Rugby team will meet South Canterbury at Fraser Park this afternoon. The visit of the team has aroused keen interest. Little is known in Timaru of the strength of the game in the far north, but there is every reason to believe that the playing standard there is on a fairly high plane. The visitors are reported to favour the open type of game, which with speedy backs can prove so devastating even to the most solid opposition. It is expected therefore that a bright exhibition of the game will be provided this afternoon. Because of injuries received on the southern tour, several players will not be available for the South Canterbury team. In addition to Cartwright and McPhail, who were not available for selection, A. Gaffaney and McShane have now withdrawn. O'Sullivan will take McShane’s place in the forwards, but the necessary rearrangement of the back-line will not be made until this morning. By its fine win against Southland on Saturday, when the whole side gave a much livelier display than against Otago, the South Canterbury players have done much to re-establish themselves in the eyes of the public, South Canterbury has not suffered defeat on Fraser Park for nearly two seasons and in spite of fielding a depleted team, the local players can be relied on to-day to do their utmost tc maintain that record. The North Auckland team will be: Full back: Berkhart. Three-quarters: S. Hona, R. White, C. Osbaldiston. Five-eighths:: M. Tanata, R. Franish. Half-back: V. Hackett. Forwards:: L. Snelling, E. Piarama, R. Flovell, B. Bradley, C. White, D. Neill, H. Whin, M. Morressey. Reserves—Forwards: R. McCracken, B. Wordley; backs: B. Winter, E. Wilson, A. Johns. CONTROVERSY OVER A LOAN By Telegrapn - Plest- AssnrlatlOD DUNEDIN, September 1. Some indignation at the Auckland Rugby Union's attitude on the terms of the £lOO loan to the northern body by the Otago Union at 4 per cent, was expressed at a meeting of the local union, especially since Auckland’s original application was treated by request as strictly confidential. The treasurer, Mr Spedding, stated that he had informed the Auckland manager that if the amount was repaid this year, no interest would be charged, but if it was outstanding indefinitely, interest must be added. On the motion of Mr Harris two resolutions were carried, the first deprecating Auckland allowing the arrangements to be made public, in view of its own request that the matter should be confidential, and the second, that Auckland should be offered £lOO without Interest, repayable when the Otago team next visits Auckland.
