HOUSING SCHEME
MR A. TYNDALL APPOINTED DIRECTOR By lelegraoh -Pt pm* Association WELLINGTON, September 1. The Government’s plans for a comprehensive housing scheme was advanced a further stage to-day with the announcement by the Prime Minister of the appointment of Mr A. Tyndall, Under-Secretary for Mines, to take charge of tjie new housing department as director of housing construction. In the meantime Mr Tyndall will continue to act as Under-Secretary for Mines. Although the Prime Minister was unable to make a definite statement, it is generally believed that Mr J. A. Lee will be appointed Parliamentary Undersecretary under the Civil List Amendment Act, and will take full charge of housing construction operations. Mr Lee is at present Parliamentary Undersecretary to the Prime Minister, but until appointed by Governor-General’s warrant under the new legislation, that is really only a courtesy title. For a start about £3,000,000 is to be spent on the construction of houses, and that the initial effort is likely to be directed toward relieving the present acute housing shortage in Wellington and Auckland.
