MAGISTRATE’S COURT BY-LAW CASES 1 Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., presided at the sitting of the Waimate Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning. John Herbert Sauer, on a charge of cycling on a footpath, was fined 5/and costs 10/-. For allowing a horse to wander, Gordon Bain was fined 2/6 and costs 10/-. A similar charge again Timothy Kennedy was dismissed. Horace Tooley wab fined 2/6 with 10/- costs, on a charge of allowing a cow to wander. On a similar charge in respect to two cows. E. Finnell was fined 5/- and 10/- costs. YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB ADDRESS AT HUNTER The Hunter Young Farmers’ Club held its fifth monthly meeting in the Hunter Hall when the chairman, Mr J. Geaney, presided over a large attendance of members. Mr P. McNeill was appointed as a delegates to represent the club at the next meeting of the Waimate A. and P. Association regarding young farmers’ sheep judging competition at the annual show. It was decided to go to Waihaorunga for the debate between the two clubs, the subject to be, “That Modem Civilisation is a Failure.” The chairman then Introduced the speaker for the evening, Mr C. R. Stringer, Oamaru, who gave a very interesting address on “Points of Interest to Farmers; Notes while Abroad.” He dealt extensively with New Zealand's markets in England and farming conditions in Gteat Britain, compared with those in New Zealand, After many questions had been put to the speaker, a vote of thanks was moved by Mr J. D. Gregan and carried by acclamation. BUSINESS HOURS A NEW SCHEDULE At a meeting of Waimate retailers held in the Borough Council Cha. - bers to consider new business hours 'n view of the recent legislation the following amended hours were approved: Drapery, boot stores, jewellers: Open daily 8.30; close 5.30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 9 p.m. on Friday, 12 noon on Saturday. Grocery, crockery and hardware: Monday to Thursday, open 8.30 a.m., close 5 p.m.; Friday, open 8 a.m., close 8 p.m.; Saturdays open 8 a.m., close 12 noon. Stationers, tobacconists and hairdressers: Open daily at 8 am.; close 5.30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 9 p.m. on Friday and at noon on Saturday. The opening of business on Saturday morning was unanimously approved. On the motion of Mr D. Keyes it was decided to appoint the following committee: Messrs D. Newall, J. B. Sinclair, H. C. Foster, D. Keyes, W. F. George, D. G. Ashley, A. Lyall, P. Grant and L. A. Betten. It was suggested that other businesses observe the same hours as the grocery and hardware trades. BASKETBALL CONGRATULATIONS TO PLAYER At a meeting of the Waimate Basketball Sub-Association the president (Miss J. C. Elliott) congratulated the two Waimate players, Misses Anna Malthus and Nancy Price, who were chosen to play in the South Canterbury representative team at Are recent New Zealand tournament, on the win recorded by South Canterbury. Miss Malthus had been chosen to play m the team to represent New Zealand in Australia next year. Miss Elliott said she had much pleasure, on behalf of the Sub-Association in congratulating Miss Malthus on her success, and hoped that it would be an incentive to other players to improve their standard of play in the futuie. The following will represent Waimate B against an Otago representa - tive team on Saturday: F. Sullivan, J. Ross, J. Wilson, L. Dixon, S. O'Malley. P. Mansen, R. McAleer, P. Fraser, N. Hore. Emergencies: M. Grant, D. Marshall, C. Thomas. WOMEN’S INSTITUTES VVILLOWBRIDGE At the monthly meeting of the Willowbridge Women’s Institute, Mrs J. C. Faulkner presided over a very poor attendance of members and visitors. The motto for the day was: “What a pleasant world it would be if the things we kick at would not kick back.” The roll call, “What annoys you most,” caused some amusement. After the business of the day had concluded those members present journeyed to Waimate and visited the Waituna branch. Arno. Mrs O'Hara presided over a fair attendance at the August meeting of the Arno Women’s Institute. A motion of

sympathy was passed with Mrs Dugdale in her recent bereavement. A bring and buy table in charge >f Mrs Meredith was well patronised. i A demonstration of passe partout was given by Mrs O’Hara, who was accorded a vote of thanks. Competitions resulted: Covered coat hanger (senior), Mrs O’Hara 1, Mrs Meredith and Miss Dugdale 2, Mrs Macgregor 4; junior, Olive Morrison 1, Myra Olerenshaw 2, Jean Thomas and Topsy Farrell 3. Best bloom: Senior, Mrs Dyer 1, Mrs Meredith and Mrs Fitzsimmons 2, Miss Dugale 4; junior, Topsy Farrell 1, Anne Dyer 2, Joan Dyer and M. Olerenshaw 3. The hostesses, Mrs W. Elliot, Misses I. Dugdale and Marie Smith, handed round a dainty afternoon tea. MINIATURE RIFLES The following were the highest scores off the rifle at the weekly shoot of the Hook Miniature Rifle Club: F. Grayson 79, L. Bell 78, A. Kingsbury 77, R. Rathgen 77, A. Burness 76, H. Mason 75, R. Gabites 71, C. Rose 74 H. Meyer 73, W. Richards 73, B. Alty 72, R. Wilson 71, F. Rathgen 70. F. Grayson won the club button and A. Burness the Mills button. SOCIAL AT HOOK The Hook Tennis Club held its fortnightly euchre party on Thursday evening. Prizes given by Mr Ron Wilson were won by Mrs Mackenzie and Mr Macpherson, consolation prizes going to Mrs Stewart and Mr Turner A prize for the guessing competition given by Mrs Stewart was won by Mrs Rose. PERSONALS Mrs J. Briggs, Waihao Downs, has returned home after a holiday visit to Amberley and Christchurch. Misses A. Shephard and E. Brockett. Masterton, are staying with Mr and Mrs D. Thompson, Waihao Downs. Mr E. C. Wright, Waihao Downs, has returned home after a short visit to Roxborough. Mrs D. Preece, Waihao Downs, is spending a holiday at Kaiapoi and Christchurch. Mr and Miss M. Wright, Roxborough, who have been staying with Mr and Mrs E. C. Wright, Waihao Downs, have returned home. Mrs H. Stenhouse and Miss Alice Milne, Dunedin, are spending the school vacation at Arno. Mrs G. Perry and family, Seacliff, are spending the holidays at Amo. Miss W. Gardener, who for some years has been on the staff of the Waimate Primary School, has been appointed to the position of infa*it mistress at the East School, Ashburton. Miss Gardener will leave to take up her new position at the end ox October. Mr A. Finlayson, who has been stationmaster at Waimate for a number of years, has received notice of transfer, but at the present time information as to his new position or time of departure has been received. Mr F. S. B. Dawson, of Middlemarch, has been appointed to succeed Mr Finlayson at Waimate. Procters, The Opticians, Christchurch, will be making their next pro 4 fessional visit to Waimate on Friday. 18th September, when they may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Royal Hotel.
