LOAN REDEMPTION RESOLUTION PASSED A special meeting of the Geraldine 1 Borough Council was attended by the i Mayor (Mr B. R. Macdonald) and Crs. J. R. Lack, A. J. Bell, H. Russell, P. H. Davis and the town clerk (Mr L. F. Grimstone). Apologies were received I from Crs. E. B. D. Logan and Z. O. Sherratt. On the motion of Crs. Russell and Davis, a resolution making a special rate of 7-8 d in the £ as security for a loan of £lOOO that has been raised t > redeem the Acetylene Gas Loan of £2OO and the Masonic Hall Loan of £BBO (less accumulated sinking funds and other available moneys) was carried. It was explained that the currency of the loan was for 11 years, and that the striking of the rate would not increase the total rates, but the resolution was necessary as security for the loan. A letter was received from the secretary of the Canterbury Progress League (Mr P. R. Climie), advising that a conference about an afforestation policy for Canterbury would be held in Christchurch to-day. It was hoped that every local body in the province would be represented. It was agreed not to appoint a delegate. RIVER PROTECTION BOROUGH COUNCIL’S POSITION The inclusion of the Geraldine Borough in the Geraldine County River Board area was discussed at a special meeting of the Geraldine Borough Council, when it was decided to obtain further information from the River Board and the Temuka Borough Council before making a decision. A letter was received from the Geraldine County solicitor (Mr W. H. Walton), who enclosed a copy of a letter from the Under-Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs, with suggestions by the Crown law draughtsman on the amendment proposed to be made to the Geraldine County River District Act. He asked to be advised whether the Council had definitely decided that the borough would remain outside the river district, so that he might instruct the Department of Internal Affairs that it was not intended to proceed with the amendment of the Act. MONTHLY RAINFALL MODERATE REGISTRATION Rain fell at ‘Waitui” on seven days during August with a total of 1.57,., inches for the month, compared with 81 points in August, 1935. The maximum fall of 55 points was registered on the 28th, and other falls were: —16 points on the 6th, 2 on the 11th, 3 on the 12th, 15 on the 22nd, 12 on the 29th, and 54 on the 30th. The total for the eight months to August 31 is 25.93 inches, compared with 17.52 inches for the same period last year.
